And Assam, where poll dates are likely to be announced by the end of this month, have a large number of farmers with small landholdings, whom the PM and other BJP leaders have consistently tried to reach out by citing benefits of the three laws. In his last speech in Lok Sabha, PM Narendra Modi had cited the views of farmer leader and former PM Choudhary Charan Singh, who in his book had expressed concern that the size of landholdings was shrinking so rapidly that farmers would not be able to ply their tractors in the fields.
In his recent speeches in Parliament, the PM had said that his government was committed to the welfare of small farmers, citing the three farm laws and other central schemes. In the budget, the government has proposed an outlay of Rs 131.5 crore for farmers’ welfare, half of which will be used to make payments under Kisan Samman Nidhi to over 9 crore farmers.
